21 Feb UNR adds $47.5M fitness center
While college students may have a reputation for not liking 8 a.m. Monday morning classes, more than 200 had no problem standing in line at 6 a.m. to work out.
The earlier risers were part of the first group to sample the now open E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center. The 108,000 square foot facility, in the center of campus, doubles the fitness space at the growing university.
“The real purpose is to add a facility that students can use to build a lifelone habit of physical fitness and wellness to go along with the lifelong habit of continuous learning,” said UNR President Marc Johnson.
The $47.5 million project includes a gym with three basketball courts, areas for weightlifting, cardio training and classes. An indoor running track and fitness stairway are also part of the four-story facility.
The fitness center for students, faculty, staff and alumni is open from 6 a.m. to mignight Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Funding sources for the project:
$8 million naming gift by the E.L. Wiegand Foundation
$1.5 million gift from Mario Gabelli and the Gabelli Foundation
$3 million University of Nevada, Reno Foundation, studen fees and bonds.
